Intelligent feed-in from the battery with neoom Ai

This article describes the functions of intelligent feed-in with neoom Ai

Topics in this article:

How intelligent feed-in works:

Feeding in with a non-intelligent system:

The following chart shows the 24 hours of a typical summer day with the course of the electricity price (blue bars), the PV generation curve (yellow) and the times when a non-intelligent battery system normally charges the battery (purple area) and feeds into the grid (yellow area).

You can see in the chart that when PV production starts in the morning hours, the battery is charged first, and only once it is full is the surplus PV power fed into the grid around midday. Typically, the electricity price is very low around midday, or even negative, so a customer with a dynamic feed-in tariff receives little feed-in remuneration in the best case and may even lose money in the worst case.

Intelligent feed-in with neoom Ai and a dynamic feed-in tariff based on EPEX Spot Day Ahead:

Prerequisite:
For the neoom Ai site, a dynamic feed-in tariff is configured in the neoom App in the GRIID skill:

Please note that only as the site owner can you change the feed-in contract in the neoom App. To check whether you are the site owner, log in at connect.neoom.com and select the menu item "Users". There you will see a green check mark in the "Site owner" column for the email address you must use to log in to the neoom App in order to change the electricity tariff.

Intelligent feed-in with neoom Ai consists of 2 parts:

1.) Intelligent shifting of battery charging:

neoom Ai shifts charging of the battery with PV power into the hours when the feed-in tariff is low, so that in hours with higher electricity prices the PV power is fed into the grid. This increases the average feed-in revenue on that day. (see the following chart)

neoom Ai takes into account the PV generation forecast and the consumption forecast for that day to make sure the battery is still charged sufficiently even when charging is shifted.

2.) Intelligent feed-in from the battery:

In the summer months, the energy of the battery fully charged with PV power is often not consumed in the evening and night hours. neoom Ai calculates fully automatically how much energy is needed in the battery for self-consumption and feeds the unused energy into the grid in the evening and night hours, namely when the feed-in tariffs are highest.

This neoom Ai optimization leads to a drastic improvement of the average feed-in revenue.

How much more feed-in revenue can be achieved with a dynamic (EPEX Spot Day Ahead based) feed-in tariff through these new neoom Ai functions:

The average feed-in remuneration of a typical neoom Ai site with 10 kWh battery size, 5,000 kWh PV annual production and an annual electricity consumption of 3,500 kWh was € 4.07 ct/kWh in 2024 with a dynamic feed-in tariff.

If the customer does not have a dynamic feed-in tariff, but a subsidized OeMAG (AT) or EEG (DE) tariff, the average feed-in tariff in 2024 was around € 6.3 or € 7 ct/kWh.

With neoom Ai optimization, this customer would have achieved an average feed-in tariff of € 10.2 ct/kWh in 2024.

Compared with non-intelligent feed-in at a dynamic tariff, that is an increase by a factor of 2.5.

Even compared with a subsidized EEG or OeMAG feed-in tariff, that is an increase of 50% and more.

Intelligent feed-in with neoom Ai into an energy community:

neoom Ai can also feed surplus energy from the battery into an energy community. This means, for example, that a member of an energy community with a 10 kWp PV system and a 20 kWh storage system can achieve an average energy community feed-in additional revenue of € 30 to € 70 per year (depending on the energy community).

Users also help increase the self-sufficiency of the entire energy community, so the other members benefit as well.

Legal regulations in Austria only allow green PV power to be fed into an energy community. Therefore, energy community participants are not allowed to charge the battery from the grid while feeding into the energy community at the same time, because in such cases it cannot be guaranteed that only PV power is fed in. This means that the two "toggles" "Charge battery from grid" and "Feed in from battery" in the neoom App must not be activated at the same time.

In which time windows does neoom Ai feed into the energy community: Because real-time data on whether there is energy demand in the energy community is currently not available, this can only be determined based on historical data.

Currently, the same feed-in time windows are used for all energy communities. Namely from sunset to sunrise, when typical PV-generation-dominated energy communities have a supply deficit. Due to consumption peaks in the evening and in the morning, neoom Ai preferentially feeds in the largest energy volumes at these times, but can also feed in smaller energy volumes during the night.

In further iteration stages we will support energy-community-specific feed-in time windows by taking into account the individual demand profile of the energy community of the neoom site.

How you can activate intelligent feed-in:

To do this, you only need to set the battery optimization strategy to "Intelligent" in the neoom App. This activates the function "Intelligent shifting of battery charging".

If you also want to feed intelligently from the battery into the grid, set the toggle "Feed in from battery".

Alternatively, the functions can also be activated at connect.neoom.com: Go to connect.neoom.com --> Devices --> select the storage system --> click the "Control" tab and make the settings as shown in the screenshot below.

After activating the "Feed in from battery" toggle, neoom Ai then decides automatically:

  • If a dynamic feed-in tariff has been configured for the site (neoom App --> GRIID skill), neoom Ai takes into account the hourly electricity prices based on the EPEX Spot Day Ahead exchange and feeds in when the feed-in tariff is high and enough energy is available in the battery.
  • If the site is part of a KLUUB energy community, neoom Ai feeds surplus energy from the battery at times when the energy community typically has energy demand.
  • Non-KLUUB energy communities can also feed in from the battery. Because the system does not automatically detect that a non-KLUUB user is part of an energy community, this must be specified explicitly in the electricity price settings in the GRIID skill:
